Darlington is a scenic market town in the North of England. It has a historically important grade 1 listed church named after St Cuthbert, as well as a historic market area. However it is famed for being part of the first passenger railway in the world, going between Stockton and Darlington. The railway was built to carry passengers as well as goods over its 26 mile length. It opened in 1825 and was then extended over the years.

Darlington is also renowned for its bridge building and it is reported that both the River Amazon and the River Nile have bridges that came from Darlington. A firm based in Darlington also built the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Darlington itself lies on the River Skerne, which is a tributary of the River Tees.

The Evans Business Centre is located in a popular industrial estate to the east of Darlington centre. It provides a range of offices, manufacturing workshops and storage space.

Knights Table have been at the centre for 4 and half years!! They moved to Evans Easyspace on 1st January 2009 being the third client to rent space in our newly opened centre.

The café is well known around Battlefield Enterprise Park for selling some of the best sandwiches and homemade snacks in the area, providing us with cakes and refreshments when we hold charity events here at the centre. Joan is even arranging a herb garden to be planted just outside the cafe so they can be used in dishes prepared daily with fresh ingredients. Knights Table Café holds a level 5 food hygiene rating for the second year running.

Joan commented ‘I have seen the centre grow month by month until the centre was fully occupied, I have enjoyed meeting all the clients who have now become regulars here at the café. Michelle the centre manager and Leanne the receptionist are always there to help with any problems that may arise and solve them quickly’.

If you are in the area make sure you pop in, their menu ranges from a full English breakfast to light homemade salads, they have something for everyone.

As part of the campaign the Energize team who are based at The Rural Enterprise Centre, Shrewsbury marked the occasion when the torch passed through our County for the first time by inviting the Rural Enterprise Centre, general public and its clients to join them in a special challenge.

On Thursday 30th May 2013, the Energize team ran a virtual re-creation of the Olympic Torch Relay which was run through Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin for the first time one year ago to the day. Nikki Readyhough, Chris Tate, Kevin Rose and Michelle Jones staff of Evans Easyspace all got their running shoes on and got involved in the event as well as Some of Shrewsbury Centres clients including Dexs Midnight Runners, Taybar, Zen Communications and many more. They all completed the 66.5 mile distance that the torch took through our County in one day on a treadmill and hand bike in the reception of the centre. Knights Table café also provided cakes and refreshments for the event. Energize managed to raise funds to support both their Community Games grant scheme and Macmillan Cancer Care in the County, and also to raise awareness of Community Games and the excellent work that their local Community Games organisers did to bring more sport and cultural activities to your communities.

A market review of the office sector for the first quarter of 2013 has revealed very promising results.

The review shows that, during a time that is usually incredibly sluggish on the office space front, uptake of offices throughout the UK has increased.

Overall activity for the market has increased by 5 per cent above it usual average. Much of the activity was based around city centres, as was the case in Manchester, Bristol and Newcastle, with city centre uptake sitting 9 per cent above average.

The review, which studies changes within the market in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle, showed that the office industry in the UK is thriving despite the recession.

Office rentals in out-of-town locations have also soared, being a huge 37 per cent above average.

The increases can be easily explained though – many city councils are currently undergoing regeneration schemes, and in Manchester, the new HOME art centre has been given the go ahead thanks to funding from the Arts Council, and Central Station in Newcastle is set to undergo an £8m refurbishment.

Also, the recession has produced more start-up businesses than before the financial crisis. This can be explained by the fact that, following redundancy or wage limitations, people chose to set up their own businesses and go it alone, which could help to pull the country out of recession at the end of the day.

Many new businesses have moved into city centres in recent months, and this can be clearly seen from the report. The UK has recently narrowly avoided falling back into a triple-dip recession, and the latest findings for Q1 of 2013 could show hope for the future of the country’s economy.

What do you think of the latest figures?

Now in its 26th year, the 10 day long festival is set in Hay on Wye, the little ”book town” on the border of Herefordshire with Wales.

This year Miranda Hart, Dara O’Briain, Alan Davies, KT Tunstall, Cerys Matthews, Christy Moore and Seth Lakeman are evening headliners.

The wider economic benefits of the festival is felt across Herefordshire by local businesses as the event sells over 200,000 tickets to visitors and what started off on a very small scale has now moved to a site on the edge of the town with its sea of marquees. Combines with the towns dozens of second hand bookshops Hay has become arguably one of the finest destinations in the world for book lovers.
